Dr. Jervette R. Ward, Dr. Derrick Lanois, and Ph.D. Candidate Armanthia Duncan presented on the TV show Scandal at the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) Centennial Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. The panel was chaired by Dr. Le'Trice Donaldson, and Dr. Sheena Harris served as the Commentator. Scandal has become a social phenomenon drawing millions of viewers weekly. These viewers gaze upon the lead actress Kerry Washington who plays Olivia Pope, a powerbroker and fixer but also a mistress and a criminal. A web of race, class, gender, and sexuality are conveyed to viewers as authentic and realistic performances. This panel examined the multitude of messages delivered to the audience utilizing historical depictions of African Americans.
